The Pomeranian (often known as a Pom) is named for the Pomerania region in Central Europe. Because of its small size the Pomeranian is known as a toy dog breed. The forerunners of today’s Pomeranian breed were large working dogs from the Arctic regions.

Pomeranian’s have been made popular by a number of royal owners since the 18th century. Queen Victoria owned a small Pomeranian, and since then the breed had decreased 50% from its original size. Overall, the Pomeranian is a sturdy, healthy dog.  In 2013 the breed is among the top twenty most popular breeds in the USA.

Appearance

Pomeranian’s are small dogs weighing an average of 6 lbs and standing about 8 high.They are sturdy dogs with an abundant textured coat. The top coat forms a ruff of fur on the neck, which they are well known for.

In the earliest of days the Pomeranian’s were white or occasionally brown or black. Queen Victoria’s Pomeranian that she adopted was red. She was able to make the color fashionable by the end of the 19th century. Now days they come in the widest variety of colors of any dog breed, including white, black, brown, red, orange, cream, blue, sable, black and tan, brown and tan, spotted, brindle, plus combinations of those colors.

Temperament

Pomeranian’s are a very friendly, playful and lively breed of dog. They love to be around their owners and are known to be protective of them. They are alert and aware of changes in their environment. They are somewhat defensive of their territory and will therefore bark when they hear outside noises. Pomeranian’s are smart dogs, and they respond well to training. They are extroverted and enjoy being the center of attention.

Overall health

The life expectancy of a Pomeranian is 12 to 16 years. A Pomeranian is a sturdy dog. The breed does have similar health issues to many dog breeds. Pomeranian’s health issues can develop as a result of lack of attention to grooming and teeth-, ear-, and eye-cleaning. With routine care, these problems can be avoided. Dry food is recommended as they are known to be prone to early tooth loss.
